Necessity

La necessitat. “Mirmanda”, 236. Edicions de 1984. Barcelona, 2023.

Alícia, a fifty-two-year-old photographer, travels to Menorca to work on an article about the island of Llatzeret, a now obsolete medical fortress that served as a temporary quarantine station for travellers arriving from afar and who intended to enter the mainland. A series of unexpected events beyond her control force her to remain there longer than she had originally planned. While staying in an off-season hotel, removed from her everyday surroundings, overwhelmed by this sudden immobility, tormented and frightened by this strange environment, she begins a process of introspection that will lead her to confront some very primal, unfamiliar and often antagonistic feelings that will force her to confront her innermost self. Thus, where one would think that nothing could happen, it turns out that anything is possible.

Necessity is about a process of self-discovery involving the assumption of an identity marked by contradiction and uncertainty. This endeavour can only be resolved through a willingness to renew oneself. This vital experience leads to a state of unease without which aesthetic construction would not be possible.

The watchman and the things

El vigilant i les coses. “Mirmanda”, 70. Edicions de 1984. Barcelona, 2009.

August, a watchman with an indifferent but obsessive and perfectionist nature, is going through a fierce inner struggle. Having withdrawn from everyone and everything, he renounces all memories and pleasures and tries his best to avoid the headaches that come with good intentions. All this in order to understand the fervour of his time. But is this behaviour, which distinguishes him and sets him apart from others, the result of failure, or is it the result of a carefully thought-out project? Is he a coward or a hero?

One day, the watchman is struck by the feeling that a major occurrence is about to change everything. Thus, in a strange unfolding of events, August, who would have preferred a life devoid of obligations and who hated being left by the wayside, finds himself both spectator and protagonist of an unlikely adventure, trapped in the mundane of everyday life that now threatens his independence. Real life will eventually force him to intervene.

The way in which this unique character resolves these conflicts forms the basis of this fascinating book, which is full of insightful reflections and has a wonderful way of revealing the most obscure and unfathomable facets of human nature.

The death of the story-teller

La mort del fabulador. “Biblioteca mínima”, 73. Quaderns Crema. Barcelona, 1999.

Eccentric and oracular, this is a novel in which the anecdotes, the situations and the various strands of the plot come together to keep the reader suspended in a dreamlike space. Reading becomes a stimulating adventure in which comedy and enlightenment merge to evoke a world that has much in common with the primitivism of silent films, and in which the protagonist, pursued by an unknown threat, escapes and finds himself in a circus set on a beach. The result is a complex and disintegrated moral parable.
